The Fountains UMC partners with other United Methodist Churches in the Desert Southwest Conference and with 1MISSION to build homes with families in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. 1MISSION created the program in 2008 and to date, over 500 homes have been built in Puerto Penasco, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
The participant commitment is for a four-day weekend, driving to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) on Thursday, building Friday/Saturday/Sunday morning, and driving back home Sunday afternoon (about a four hour drive). Participants may stay in a ‘bunkhouse’ at 1MISSION base camp just a few miles north of Puerto Penasco, or take an RV or reserve a room in a motel or condo in town.
Registration includes a fee of $260, plus $5 per night for the bunkhouse bed. All meals are provided at base camp from Friday morning through lunch on Sunday. However, the payback for participants far exceeds the cost. Not only is there amazing fun and fellowship with other volunteers, but there is also the delight in making new friends among the families working to earn their home by donating hours to building others’ homes.
And nothing can describe the sheer joy everyone experiences when the keys to their new home are given to the family at noon on Sunday.
Donate to future 1MISSION builds here. Scholarships are available for anyone needing help with the registration fee. Please contact the church office (480-837-7627) or Sharon Shaw Elrod (email@example.com) for more information.
