“Saving Jesus from the Church: How to Stop Worshiping Christ and Start Following Jesus” with Vernon Meyer
Fountain Hills — This year’s annual three-part series on theology with the Rev. Dr. Vern Meyer will be hosted at The Fountains, a United Methodist Church on Thursday morning, January 30th from 10am to 11:30 and continue on Thursday mornings Feb. 6th and Feb. 13th. In this year’s sessions, Dr. Meyer will unpack Dr. Robin Meyers book, Saving Jesus from the Church: How to Stop Worshiping Christ and Start Following Jesus.
The marriage of bad theology and hypocritical behavior by the church has left so many thoughtful people disgusted with the Church that in order to be taken seriously, the whole purpose of religion itself needs to be re-evaluated.
The best of biblical scholarship is in the process of recasting core Christian concepts – not a call to embrace the far left or to try something brand new, but to recover something very old. “Saving Jesus from the Church” is about calling people to pursue an alternative vision of the Christian life that sees Jesus as Teacher, not Savior; Christianity as Compassion, not Condemnation; and Religion as Relationship, not Righteousness. “Saving Jesus from the Church” sheds a light on how to cut through the doctrine and dogma and follow Jesus’ teachings today. Topics will include: Do we worship Christ or Follow Jesus? Is the Cross a sign of futility or a sign of forgiveness? And Christianity as Compassion, Not Condemnation.
The Rev. Dr. Vernon Myer is a former Catholic priest, who has an MA in Theology from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, an MA in Pastoral theology from the University of San Francisco, and a PhD in Theology from the University of Dayton. Dr. Meyer is currently a United Church of Christ pastor in Sun Lakes.
